Building News: Kooltherm keeps it slim


Kingspan's Kooltherm range of products' ability to deliver outstanding thermal performance, from minimal insulation thicknesses, has been used to full effect as part of the retrofit of an extraordinarily narrow house in central London.



Slim House, a mid-terrace in Clapham, London, measures just 2.3 metres across internally. The plot was originally used as access to stables from the high street and many of the rooms in the building were cramped and gloomy. Architects Alma-nac were hired to design an extension for the rear of the property. Tristan Wigfall, partner at Alma-nac, discussed the project:

"At Slim House our aim was to improve both the internal space and natural lighting against a tight budget. To achieve this we designed a rear extension with a slanted slate clad roof. This allowed several rooflights to be installed, greatly improving the natural lighting in the centre of the house.

The Kingspan Kooltherm products were a key part of this solution, allowing the building to achieve excellent thermal performance, without having to compromise on living space. Kingspan also provided excellent technical support regarding how best to insulate the unventilated roof build-up."

To insulate the roof of the new extension, main contractors McGovern Carpentry installed two 75 mm layers of Kingspan Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board between the joists. This was followed by a further 37.5mm thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm K18 Insulated Plasterboard, preventing thermal bridging through the joists and helping to achieve an overall roof U-value of just 0.14 W/m2.K.

Kingspan Kooltherm K18 Insulated Plasterboard was also installed in various thicknesses as part of the extension wall build-ups. The product combines insulation, dry–lining and vapour control in one board, making it ideal for projects where space is at a premium. All products in the Kingspan Kooltherm range have a Class 0 fire rated insulation core and are manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero ODP and low GWP.

The new building layout is designed to make maximum use of space, with every nook and cranny utilised to keep the rooms uncluttered. The floor plates within the newly formed rooms have also been lowered, increasing the floor to ceiling height thereby creating a greater sense of space.

The outstanding thermal performance offered from minimal insulation thicknesses by Kingspan's Kooltherm range of products made them the perfect choice for the refurbishment of Slim House, a mid-terrace in Clapham, London, which measures just 2.3 metres across internally.

The Beginners Guide To Pipe Insulation: Getting to grip with the basics

Our Beginners Guide series of blogs will look at the common areas of pipe insulation lagging that you will want to look at when choosing your product. This guide will be of most interest to the DIY installers, but some of our later guides will cover more complex products and areas of application.

One of the things we get asked about a lot is what the dimensions quoted for pipe insulation actually mean. You will always see three measurements quoted when describing pipe insulation; Wall Thickness, Bore Size and Length.

In the below diagram, A is the "Bore" and B is the "Wall".

Wall thickness is very simply how much insulation you have; so for example if you have 13mm Wall pipe insulation, then that means you have 13mm of insulation on either side of your pipe. This thickness is very often one of the most important part of your decision; too thin and you might not get the results you are looking for but too thick and it might not fit between your pipe and the wall.

Frost protection for domestic pipes

With the cold weather approaching we thought it would be a good idea to touch on how best to protect your pipes from frost this winter.

When dealing with frost protection on pipes inside a building your aim with insulating them is to delay the onset of freezing for as long as possible; it is not possible to guarantee a pipe will not freeze by insulation alone. The better the insulation, and the thicker the insulation, the longer you will give yourself. Under normal circumstances you aim to give yourself about 8-10 hours protection against sub zero temperatures. With pipes inside a home this is usually long enough to be sure the pipes will not freeze.


Ice formation inside the pipes will lead to an increase in pressure. As the water tries to flow this pressure will increase, and eventually will lead to the pipes bursting. A burst pipe can cause a lot of problems, not least of which is a lot of damage to your property and a lot of expense incurred.
