Rockwool Insulation and The Blue Planet Aquarium, Denmark

Creating the right environment: For the curved facade of Denmark’s new aquarium, The Blue Planet, ROCKWOOL Denmark has delivered terrænbatts and Super Venti-Batts to secure optimal insulation.

The Blue Planet is a 9,000 m2 brand new aquarium designed by Danish architecture firm 3XN. With a great variety of species on display it will become a major tourist attraction in Copenhagen. As it is placed right next to Copenhagen Airport one of the challenges has been to create acoustic solution that protects the fish inside from the airport noise. Buildings are noisier than many people think. Traffic outside, ventilation systems, music, talking, doors opening and closing. So many sounds contribute to a typical room's acoustic environment, we sometimes don't even register them consciously.

In the case of The Blue Planet 200 mm hard ROCKWOOL batts together with 75 mm Super Venti-Batts were used. When it comes to securing good acoustics, it is important for the façade to be pressure proof and have a certain weight. The insulation provided by ROCKWOOL Denmark works towards ensuring the mass required to create optimal sound absorbing properties.

"It would have been more expensive to invest in other solutions with similar properties. Also, the possibility of finding alternatives is limited," says engineer Flemming Morsing, who works for the contracting firm responsible for steel and facade construction of The Blue Planet, Kai Andersen A/S.

Another challenge when building The Blue Planet was the pitch of the roof/wall. As the pitch of the wall was below 80°, it was considered a roof, and a certain kind of insulation was required to keep out rain. ROCKWOOL Denmark helped in the process to find a suitable solution, so that the terrænbatts and Super Venti-Batts could be used for this part as well. By sealing the insulation dowels, rain is kept out. One advantage of Super Venti-Batts is that the material is very durable as it can endure being exposed to water. Also, the non-combustible insulation materials help increase fire safety.

The design of the The Blue Planet's steel construction is created in the software program Tekla BIM. This makes the building's outline "organic", and the insulation part has had to be installed to fit the pre-defined steel construction. By delivering materials that protect the inside from the surrounding environment and fit the beautiful, organic building, ROCKWOOL Denmark has helped provide durable solutions that last for generations in Denmark's new innovative aquarium.

Climaflex pipe insulation is the UK's leading brand for polyethylene pipe insulation. People very often wrongly assume cheap means poor quality, this is not the case with a brand such as Climaflex. The Beginners Guide To Pipe Insulation: Getting to grip with the basics

Our Beginners Guide series of blogs will look at the common areas of pipe insulation lagging that you will want to look at when choosing your product. This guide will be of most interest to the DIY installers, but some of our later guides will cover more complex products and areas of application.

One of the things we get asked about a lot is what the dimensions quoted for pipe insulation actually mean. You will always see three measurements quoted when describing pipe insulation; Wall Thickness, Bore Size and Length.

In the below diagram, A is the "Bore" and B is the "Wall".

Wall thickness is very simply how much insulation you have; so for example if you have 13mm Wall pipe insulation, then that means you have 13mm of insulation on either side of your pipe. This thickness is very often one of the most important part of your decision; too thin and you might not get the results you are looking for but too thick and it might not fit between your pipe and the wall.


Frost protection for domestic pipes

With the cold weather approaching we thought it would be a good idea to touch on how best to protect your pipes from frost this winter.

When dealing with frost protection on pipes inside a building your aim with insulating them is to delay the onset of freezing for as long as possible; it is not possible to guarantee a pipe will not freeze by insulation alone. The better the insulation, and the thicker the insulation, the longer you will give yourself. Under normal circumstances you aim to give yourself about 8-10 hours protection against sub zero temperatures. With pipes inside a home this is usually long enough to be sure the pipes will not freeze.

Ice formation inside the pipes will lead to an increase in pressure. As the water tries to flow this pressure will increase, and eventually will lead to the pipes bursting. A burst pipe can cause a lot of problems, not least of which is a lot of damage to your property and a lot of expense incurred.
